Accelex’s Exit to Carta: A Milestone for Private Markets Infrastructure

In 2020, we at Illuminate Financial first invested in Accelex because we saw a clear and growing need: digitising private market workflows to unlock better data, transparency, and efficiency for investors. Carta’s acquisition of Accelex represents more than an exit it signals the next phase of infrastructure convergence in private markets.
Why We Invested: A Thesis Rooted in Structural Change
When we first met the Accelex team, we were looking at a private markets landscape where data extraction, normalization, and reporting remained largely manual, fragmented, and inefficient. Fund investors, from family offices to large institutions, were grappling with complexity in managing their alternative allocations.
Accelex tackled this pain point head-on. Their platform automated the collection and structuring of investment data from unstructured documents, enabling timely, accurate, and actionable insights for LPs and asset owners. We believed this capability could be a foundational layer in the emerging digital operating stack for private capital markets — a thesis we laid out in our original investment announcement.
Our conviction was reinforced by several core trends we highlighted then, and which have only accelerated since:
- The explosive growth in private capital markets globally.
- Increasing institutional participation in alternatives.
- Rising demand for workflow automation and better data infrastructure.
- The shift from Excel-based processes to integrated digital solutions.
The Market Today: Infrastructure for a Maturing Asset Class
Over the past few years, private markets have undergone significant structural change. Institutional interest in alternative assets has remained resilient, even amid macro headwinds. This has driven:
- Continued growth in private equity allocations, including by pension funds, endowments, and sovereign wealth funds.
- A shift towards more sophisticated technology stacks, especially around investor reporting and data transparency.
- Strategic consolidation among platforms that provide critical infrastructure to LPs, GPs, and fund administrators.
In our Private Markets 2.0 piece, we outlined how a second wave of fintech innovation is transforming the alternative asset ecosystem — moving from digitizing point solutions to building integrated platforms. This shift sets the stage for strategic acquirers to bring best-in-class capabilities together.
Why Accelex Is Strategic: Building the Operating System for Private Capital
Carta has long viewed LPs as a critical next node in its private capital platform coverage. While their fund administration offering already includes investor portals, they saw a persistent gap: much of an LP’s alternative portfolio data still lives in spreadsheets, documents, and siloed systems.
The acquisition allows Carta to offer LP Portfolio Analytics, helping allocators seamlessly analyse fund- and asset-level data across sources.
In Carta’s vision, Accelex helps complete the end-to-end private markets platform allowing Carta to serve portfolio companies, general partners, and limited partners under one umbrella.
With thousands of LPs already in their ecosystem, Carta can now deepen engagement through advanced analytics, normalized data flows, and real-time performance insights.
The future of alternatives will be decided by the platforms that can automate and integrate workflows across the entire private capital value chain
How We Supported Accelex
From our first investment through to this exit, our relationship with the Accelex team has been defined by deep engagement and active support. This includes 65 curated introductions to potential customers, partners, and investors leading to two commercial engagements and two key investors.
“Building disruptive technology is never a solo endeavour. It takes creative individuals with the courage to write the first lines of code, turning bold ideas into a tangible reality. Equally important are forward-looking clients — visionaries who are willing to embark on an uncharted path and believe in the transformative impact of innovation. Alongside them, ambitious investors play a crucial role, providing the trust, resources, and steadfast support necessary, not just at the outset but throughout every phase of the journey. We consider ourselves extremely fortunate to have crossed paths with Illuminate at the very beginning of this exciting adventure.
From our earliest conversations, the Illuminate team grasped the size of the opportunity before us. They brought a deep appreciation for how innovative technology can challenge the status quo and reshape the existing market structure. With their insight, encouragement, and partnership, we have been able to push boundaries and pursue our vision with confidence”

Looking Ahead
The story of Accelex is emblematic of the evolution of private markets infrastructure. From a focused data platform to a key component of a leading ecosystem player, it shows how the right technology, at the right inflection point, can have industry-defining impact.
For Illuminate, this is not just a successful exit. It’s validation of our broader thesis: that private markets are entering a new phase where infrastructure and data are as critical as capital.
As the sector continues to mature, we remain committed to backing the next generation of founders building the connective tissue of tomorrow’s financial infrastructure.
